DIY Lavender Body Butter: Full recipe, video tutorial and ingredient breakdown



Introduction


Body butter are anhydrous products that are made from butters, oils and waxes, they can also be emulsions however when most people think of a butter butter they have an expectation for it to be an anhydrous product. Body butters are a great way to indulge your skin providing ultimate moisturising benefits. This blog is about making your own DIY lavender body butter, including video tutorial, ingredient breakdowns and a written recipe card.


In this DIY Lavender Body Butter recipe we will be using the following ingredients:



INCI Name: Butyrospermum Parkii Butter



Shea butter is derived from the nuts of the African shea tree. A natural and renewable ingredient packed with fatty acids and vitamins, including A and E. Shea butter deeply nourishes the skin, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion. Its rich texture provides intense hydration, making it particularly effective for combating dryness and soothing irritated skin. Shea butter possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, aiding in the reduction of inflammation and protecting the skin from environmental damage. We are using it in this formula for its excellent moisturising abilities, and its solid form helps build the body of the body butter.



INCI Name: Cocos Nucifera Oil


Coconut oil, a versatile and beloved skincare ingredient, is derived from the flesh of mature coconuts. The extraction process involves either cold-pressing the coconut to obtain virgin coconut oil or using heat and fermentation for refined coconut oil. Rich in saturated fats, primarily lauric acid, coconut oil serves as a powerful natural moisturiser for the skin. Its emollient properties help to hydrate and soften the skin, making it a popular choice for nourishing dry and flaky skin. Additionally, coconut oil contains antioxidants that contribute to skin health by protecting against free radicals, promoting a youthful complexion. Whether used alone or as an ingredient in skincare formulations, coconut oil is celebrated for its ability to provide deep hydration and support overall skin well-being. We will be using it in this body butter formulation for its excellent skin benefits as describe above and the consistency it gives the overall product.


Tapioca Starch


INCI Name: Tapioca Starch



Tapioca starch, a versatile and natural ingredient, is derived from the roots of the cassava plant. The extraction process involves washing and pulping the roots, followed by separating the starch from the liquid. Tapioca starch, known for its fine texture and neutral scent, finds application in anhydrous formulations due to its remarkable grease reception abilities. Its ability to absorb excess oil makes it a valuable component in skincare products such as creams, balms, and powders. Tapioca starch not only enhances the texture of these formulations but also contributes to their mattifying effect on the skin, providing a smooth and non-greasy finish. Incorporating tapioca starch into anhydrous formulations proves beneficial in achieving a velvety, oil-free feel while maintaining the integrity of the skincare product we will be using it in this body butter for this reason.



INCI Name: Tocopherol



Vitamin E Oil is vital vitamin needed for healthy skin and hair. Whilst is is naturally occurring in many plants, it is often synthetically made to match the vitamin E found in nature. It is produced synthetically due to it being more better efficacy and stability, it is also more commercially efficient. Some Vitamin E oil is natural with minimal processing. Be sure to check the safety data sheets to determine whether the vitamin e oil is synthetically produced or natural with minimal processing. Vitamin E oil is used in skin care as an antioxidant. Natural plant oils have a high risk of premature oxidation resulting in rancid oils. Vitamin E oil is added to protect the plant oils from prevent premature oxidation, extending the shelf life of the formula.



INCI Name: Lavandula Angustifolia



Lavender essential oil, extracted from the fragrant lavender plant, is renowned for its versatile benefits for the skin. This soothing essential oil boasts anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it a go-to solution for various skincare concerns.
